Lockmoor L-Shape Desk with Hutch

Took forever to put together but its worth it!

This desk takes time and patience to put together, but it was thoroughly worth the effort. It is incredibly well designed: everything fits together neatly and the instructions are both clear and entertaining. I'm very pleased to have finally got it!

I ordered an entire set of this on line. Besides the desk and hutch, I also ordered a bookshelf, a nightstand, and the lateral file. I was very impressed how quickly it came. I ordered it Tuesday morning and everything started arriving on Thursday. It took a total of six boxes. Two boxes for the L-shaped desk, one for the hutch, one for the bookshelf, one for the file cabinet and one for the nightstand. I knew the desk would have to be assembled first so that the hutch could go on top of it. Unfortunately, one of the two boxes for the L-shaped desk arrived Thursday and the second one did not come until Saturday. The problem became that the first pieces I needed were in the second box. No big deal. Other than I had set aside Friday through Sunday to put this together and had a friend come over to help. We dove right in Friday morning only to find that a lot of the pieces we needed to start were in the other box. Again, no big deal. We attacked the remaining pieces instead. This was probably good because they were smaller pieces and it gave us an idea as to how the system was going to be put together. Saturday the desk's second box arrived. Unfortunately it looked like it had been in a truck full of alligators. There is a huge gouge on the top board for one of the halves of the l-shaped desk. Also contained that same box, was the very first piece the booklet said we needed to start working on. A broken PIECE A (GGRRRRR!)...The corner was not even attached to the rest of the piece. I have added a picture. So here it is Saturday and we are dead in the water. Customer service is only open Monday through Friday and the instructions specifically tell you not to contact Wayfair. So I'm going to have to wait until Monday and then it's probably going to take them several days to ship the replacement piece. I'll be impressed if they actually use FedEx and don't ship it via Pony Express. So, we used Saturday and Sunday to put together everything else. We had already started on a couple of the pieces, but went ahead and finished everything else in the meantime. The good news is, that's so far nothing is terribly difficult to assemble. It's time consuming, yes. So far the lateral file has been the most difficult. The bookshelf and even the hutch that goes on top of the l-shaped desk were relatively easy. I am a little bit concerned about the hutch and bookshelf backing. They use what is basically a super fancy cardboard product that you nail to the back of the bookshelf and the hutch. The bookshelf doesn't concern me as much as the hutch. The hutch is a whole bunch of little pieces all either screwed or bracketed on. The hutch is also incredibly top-heavy. It will not stand up on its own once you assemble it, unless you prop it up against the wall. To be safe, I'm keeping it on its top, or upside down, because it stands that way safely and it's sturdy that way. Again, I have a lot of concerns about the base of the hutch being able to support the extreme weight of the top. I'm guessing by the time it sits on the desk and is bolted, or braced, it will be fine. , It will have to wait several more days until I can order the replacement part for the broken piece A of the L-shaped desk.So, at this point my review is four stars even though I know it's beyond Wayfair's ability to control how the FedEx Alligators handle packages, but overall the packaging in the box could add a little bit more protection around the outside. I was impressed at how the boxes are sealed and wrapped in plastic. A utility knife versus scissors will get you through the plastic outer shell, and then the reinforcements that go around the edges is impressive. It basically pops right off and then the box is open relatively easily from there. The packaging is absolute brilliant, it just needs a little bit more to protective from aggressive package handling.And seriously--they (Sauder) could have a customer service rep working remotely over the weekend. I have a home based business and again-- I planned this very carefully so that I would have as little inconvenience to my schedule and work as possible. Currently being without a desk is a bit of an inconvenience. I'm working from a laptop on top of the lateral file. It's not fun. For a long weekend, it wasn't the end of the world, but if this is going to go on for four or five more days, I'm not going to be terribly happy. Again, not Wayfair's fault, but, they still sold the product and advertised it.
